Your 2015 SEO Checklist

Are you launching a new site or need to increase your SEO? Here is your checklist for being in the best shape for SEO this year:

  1. Did you create a new Email address for your site?
  2. Did you install Google Analytics? This is a must!
  3. Did you install Google Webmaster tools?
  4. Did you install Bing Webmaster tools?
  5. Did you install Google Analytics and SEO for WordPress? Use these plugins to make life easier.
  6. Have you checked for 404/500 errors, duplicate content, missing titles and technical errors that Google has found with Google Webmaster Tools?
  7. Have you checked for technical errors with Browseo? Check for 301 redirects that should be 302 redirects.
  8. Have you checked for broken links using Xenu? It’s free!
  9. Pick keywords and check searcher intent and difficulty using Google’s Keyword Research Tool.
  10. Have you done research on competitor link profiles? Check what type of anchor text they’re using and how they’re getting links. Use sites link Link Diangnosis, Open Site Explorer, Ahrefs, and Majestic. Do this to start link building.
  11. Is your primary keyword incorporated into your URL?
  12. Make sure your title tags are 65 characters or less or else they will be truncated in results.
  13. Make sure all of your meta description tags are 155 characters or less.
  14. Are you using only H1 tags? Have you included your keyword in the tag? Is your H1 tag before any H2, H3, or H4 tags?
  15. Is there at least 100 words of text on your site? Is this text search engine accessible? Is there any unnecessary text on your site?
  16. Use natural language that is influenced by your keywords, not just the keywords themselves. Use synonyms!
  17. Search engines see the ALT tags of images, do your images have descriptive ALT tags? Do they have filenames?
  18. The most important part of SEO is off-page optimization! This can be hard, but start link building ASAP! Check out the ClickMinded Link Building Strategy Guide.
  19. Make sure links to your internal pages are SEO friendly – describe the page you’re linking to in your anchor text.
  20. Have you checked for duplicate content? Don’t forget to use 301 redirects and canonical tags.
  21. Make sure to use absolute URLs instead of relative ones.
  22. Did you check your site speed? Use Google page speed tools.
  23. Use or the Google XML Sitemaps WordPress Plugin to submit an XML sitemap to Google and Bing Webmaster tools.
  24. Submit a Robots.txt file to submit to Google and Bing Webmaster tools.
  25. Have you claimed your brand name? Make sure you claim your brand name on these sites and more:
  26. Have you made sure your site is mobile-friendly? Use BrowserStack and check your site on multiple browsers.
  27. Are you on Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook?
  28. Use the Authorship Markup Walkthrough to add Authorship Markup to your site.
  29. Once you’re live, used My Site Auditor Report to double-check your site.
